Clearing Stumps Before Fence and Concrete Work

Clearing stumps before fence and concrete work: find the conflict before installation begins, share what the grinder needs to assess, and keep the project handoff clear.

Find the conflict before installation begins

A stump on a proposed fence line can occupy the space needed for posts. A stump where a patio, walkway, driveway extension, or slab is planned can interfere with site preparation. Mark the proposed work area first, then identify every stump that conflicts with that layout.

Stump grinding can remove the visible stump and reduce it below the surrounding surface, but the installer determines what ground conditions the finished project requires.

Share what the grinder needs to assess

Confirm the work boundary and permission to perform work before scheduling a stump near a neighboring property. Note existing fence panels that may be removed for access and whether the opening will be available when the grinder arrives.

Share what is known about underground lines and arrange appropriate marking before ground disturbance. Discuss what happens to the grindings as well: wood chips and loosened material should not be confused with a finished base for a hard surface.

Keep the project handoff clear

The smoothest sequence starts with an agreed layout and a site review. Next, the stump is ground to the agreed scope. Then the installer evaluates the area and performs the excavation, soil work, or base preparation needed for its own installation.

If more than one stump affects the installation, number them on the plan and photograph each one, and confirm the work after grinding and before materials are delivered or post holes are dug.
